The BMAA Awards & The Road to Popham:
Preparing for the 2026 Microlight Season

[object Object]
The BMAA National Awards and the Popham Microlight Trade Fair define the start of the 2026 microlight season. We provide essential tips for navigating the busy Popham overhead and a look at the latest 600kg microlight aircraft entering the market.
As the days lengthen, the microlight community is waking up from its winter slumber. The social season officially begins on March 28th, 2026, with the BMAA Awards Evening at Chesford Grange. This is more than just a trophy presentation; it's the primary gathering for the innovators and adventurers of the microlight world. It’s a great place to hear about the latest 600kg permit types (like the new SHARK 600 UK) that are blurring the lines between microlights and traditional Group A aircraft.
Following the awards, all eyes turn to Popham (EGHP) for the Microlight Trade Show on May 2nd–3rd. While technically a few weeks away, the planning starts now. Popham during the trade show is one of the busiest patches of Class G airspace in the UK. If you plan to fly in, you need to be "on your game." The non-standard overhead join and the proximity to the Winchester noise abatement zones require a thorough brief.
For many PPL holders who have recently transitioned to microlights to take advantage of lower running costs, these events are the perfect way to integrate into the community. Expect to see the latest in electric propulsion and avionics suites that rival airliners, all within the friendly, grassroots atmosphere that Popham is famous for. Remember: the "early bird" gets the best parking spot on the grass, so start monitoring the weather and your fuel burns now.
