The Long Eaton to Shepshed VFR Transit

Transiting the East Midlands (EGNX) CTR is made simple with the Long Eaton to Shepshed VFR route. Our 2026 guide covers the altitudes, frequencies, and visual markers needed for a professional and stress-free transit through this busy controlled airspace.

For pilots heading North or South through the "Midlands gap," a transit through the East Midlands CTR is often more efficient than skirting the complex boundaries of the surrounding CTAs. The most established route for General Aviation is the VFR lane connecting Long Eaton (M1 Junction 25) in the north and Shepshed (M1 Junction 23) in the south.

To fly this route successfully, preparation is key. As you approach from the north (Trowell Services) or south (Markfield VRP), establish contact with East Midlands Radar on 134.180 MHz. A standard request would be: "Request VFR transit via the Long Eaton and Shepshed lanes, not above 2,000ft." ATC will typically issue a squawk and a "remain outside/below" instruction until you are cleared to enter.

The beauty of this route is its simplicity: follow the M1 motorway. However, situational awareness is vital. Pilots must remain mindful of the preferential runway scheme at EMA; if Runway 27 is in use, you will likely be routed to the east of the M1 to maintain separation from departing jets.

Conversely, if Runway 09 is active, you may be kept to the west. Keep a sharp eye out for the Ratcliffe Power Station (a massive visual landmark that sits just north of the zone) and ensure you don't stray south of the Long Eaton reservoir until you have your formal "Cleared to enter" from the controller.

It’s a rewarding transit that offers a great view of the airport operations while keeping you well away from the "heavy" arrival paths.
